James J. Francis, 55, of New Bedford, died on Holy Thursday, March 28, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by family after a long illness. He was the long time companion of Betty Ann Oliveira.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Paul T. Francis and Anne C. (Mahoney) Francis.
He was a graduate of Holy Family High School, and attended Southeastern Massachusetts University (SMU). Jim was a gifted musician, and enjoyed composing music and performing.
In addition to his long time companion, he is survived by his sister, Dr. Mary Louise Francis and her husband Paul Sylvia of Acushnet; a nephew, Adam Sylvia and niece, Erin Sylvia of Acushnet; and many cousins.
He was the nephew of Marie Fitzgerald, Louise Whelton, Bettie-Anne Francis, the late John S. Francis and the late Rev. Francis L. Mahoney.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, New Bedford. Burial was at South Dartmouth Cemetery.
