TAUNTON – Marion Doel Westcoat Koss, wife of the late Walter Koss and the late David Westcoat, Sr., died at the Life Care Center of Raynham on March 4, 2013.
She was 98 years old.
Born in Taunton, she was the daughter of the late William R. and Edith (Jackson) Doel, Sr.
Marion was raised and educated in Taunton and was a graduate of Taunton High School.
Growing up on her father’s farm, known as Doel’s Oak Spring Dairy Farm, she performed many of the chores on the farm such as cultivating corn, cutting hay, feeding the herd, and bottling milk.
A retired restaurant proprietor, she owned and operated the former Marion’s Restaurant on County Street for over twenty years.
During the time the restaurant was in operation, it gained an excellent reputation for its quality of food, including homemade desserts, cordial service, and fair prices.
When the state set the meal tax on meals of $1.00 or more, Marion created a menu that contained a $.99 daily luncheon special.
This attracted a large number of businessmen who appreciated her effort.
This in turn resulted in them spreading the word of the fine dining, adding further rewards to her creative effort.
Mrs. Koss was a member of the former East Taunton Congregational Church.
Survivors include a son, David Westcoat, Jr. of East Taunton; two daughters, Joanne and Diane, two brothers; William R. Doel of Berkley, and John R. Doel of Springfield; two sisters, Dorothy Doel Newcomb of Florida, and Thelma Doel Sylvia of Lakeville; ten grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also the sister of the late Helen Doel Wilbur and Harriet Doel Erwin.
Graveside services will be held at Pine Hill Cemetery, East Taunton, on Saturday, April 6th, at 11:00 a.m.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Community Church of East Taunton, MA.
