William A. “Billy” Alexander, 72, of Fitzgerald, died April 1, 2013, at his residence.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Thursday, April 4, 2013, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark Stone officiating. Dr. R. V. Reese will deliver the eulogy. Cody Smith and David Alexander will offer family comments. Interment will follow in the Brushy Creek Cemetery, Irwin County. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Mr. Alexander was born January 22, 1941 in Tennille, Georgia to the late William Arthur & Lillian Whitley Alexander. He graduated from Irwin County High School where he enjoyed playing football. He was offered a scholarship to play at the college level at Austin-Peay. He served his country in the National Guard. Mr. Alexander pastored for 20 years in area Nazarene churches and won the Sunday school Teacher of the Year Award for the State of Georgia through the Church of the Nazarene. He managed The Bay Station in Ocilla for many years and enjoyed sharing the Word of God with family, friends, and strangers he would meet.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years: Sandra Alexander; two sons: Morris David (Jill) Alexander of San Antonio, Texas and William Paul (Becky) Alexander of Cordele; five grandchildren: Bailey, Bethany, Gaven, Gage, and Annesty; three sisters: Peggy Player, Terri Alexander, and Connie (Randy) Smith, all of Fitzgerald; two brothers: Bobby Alexander and Jimmy Alexander, both of Fitzgerald; one sister-in-law: Louise “Dee” Alexander of Canton; his mother-in-law: Nancy Elizabeth White of Fitzgerald; a brother-in-law: Dana (Betty) Ashurst of Fitzgerald; sister-in-law: Jan (Grady) Davis of Moultrie as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother: Warren Alexander, a nephew: Chandler Alexander; and father-in-law: Morris Ashurst.
