Shirley M. (Holt) Whiting, 82, of Hanover, formerly of Whitman, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 30th at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Born on August 30, 1930 in Whitman, Shirley was the daughter of the late Walter L. and Marion E. (Tillson) Holt. She is survived by her loving husband Richard A. Whiting of 60 years. Shirley was a devoted and caring mother to her children, David Whiting and his wife Deborah of Plympton, Dorinda Piro and her husband Anthony (Jay) of Norwell, Kenwood Whiting and his wife Anne of Hanover and Kurt Whiting of Hanover.
She was the sister of Carol Ames of Delaware and the late Helen Sheeler of Connecticut. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brittany Whiting, Christopher Whiting, Nicholas Piro, Matthew Piro, Brandon Whiting and Elizabeth Whiting, whom she loved dearly, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Shirley graduated from the Children’s Hospital, Boston, School of Nursing in 1952. She worked as a registered nurse for Brockton, South Shore and Cape Cod Hospitals for many years and at Cohasset Knoll skilled nursing facility as the Director of Nurses and Administrator. She developed the first Certified Nursing Assistant Program in Massachusetts and the kardex system that is still used in nursing today.
She loved music, summer trips to the cape and spending time with family. She was a very active member of the First Universalist Church of Assinippi in Norwell, MA.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 11:00AM in the First Universalist Church of Assinippi, 484 Washington St. Norwell, MA. Interment will follow in the Hanover Center Cemetery, Hanover, MA.
