Dorothea A. Hughes, 79, of Hampstead, NH died Friday, March 29th at Exeter Hospital.
Dorothea was born and educated in Lawrence, MA, the daughter of the late Jane (Kinsella) and Stephen Hughes. She graduated with the class of 1951 from St. Mary’s High School in Lawrence, and with the class of 1954 from Catherine Laboure School of Nursing in Boston. She later returned to school and earned her Bachelors Degree from St Josephs College in N. Windham, ME.
Dorothea practiced nursing at Bon Secours/Holy Family Hospital where, early in her career, she served as a nurse manager and nursing instructor and then as VP for Nursing Services for over 20 years. She served on the Board of Directors for the VNA in Lawrence, she was Past President of the Catholic Nursing Association and she was a recipient of the TWIN Award, honoring outstanding women in industry. Dorothea was well respected in her profession and served as a role model to many who were privileged to work with her. She was a diminutive woman with an outsized heart, generous to all, who loved and was beloved by her friends and family.
She is survived by her sister, Jean, wife of the late Jack Moltenbrey, of Hampstead, NH, her nieces and nephews, Anne and husband William Hagen of Hampstead, NH, MJ Moltenbrey of Washington DC, Stephen Moltenbrey and wife Kathy of Hooksett, NH, Julie and husband Thomas Doyle of Derry, NH, Jay Moltenbrey and wife Karen of Windham, NH, her cousins, Mary Ruth Roby of Methuen, MA and Steven and wife Rachel Roby of Lawrence, MA, 9 grandnieces and grandnephews, 1 great-grandniece, and many god-children.
Calling hours are on Monday, April 1st from 3:00 pm - 7:00pm at Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main Street, Salem, NH 03079. The Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, April 2nd at 10:30am at Mary Queen of Peace Church, Salem, NH. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lawrence, MA.
