WEBSTER – Irene (Poswiatowski) Konkel, 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, in St. Vincent Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
She leaves her beloved husband of 64 years, Henry J. Konkel; a son, Martin Konkel of Hampton, VA; a daughter, Judith Dery and her husband David of Webster; 4 grandchildren, Martin J. C. Konkel, Luke, Hayden and Treyton Dery; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Edward and Joseph Poswiatowski, and by a sister, Stasia Zlotnick.
She was born in Webster, a daughter of Stanley and Johanna (Szymanski) Poswiatowski, and was a lifelong resident. She graduated from Bartlett High School.
Mrs. Konkel was a sample stitcher at Webster Shoe and the recording secretary of the W-S and Bates Shoe Union until it closed.
She was a communicant of Saint Joseph Basilica and was a member of its Holy Rosary Sodality, Sacred Heart Society and Saint Anne Society. She was a member and former president of the St. Joseph Polish Women’s Club and belonged to its Past Presidents’ Club. She volunteered at the church’s festivals and bazaars for many years. She had been a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop leader for 10 years.
She enjoyed bowling, gardening, traveling, water skiing, sewing, crocheting, ceramics and baking. Everyone loved her blue ribbon blueberry muffins. She loved her family and especially spending time with her grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, April 2, from the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School Street, with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb Street. Burial will be in St. Joseph Garden of Peace. Calling hours will be Monday, April 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the funeral home.
