Manuel Nobrega, 91, of New Bedford died Monday March 25, 2013 at Sacred Heart Home.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Jose and Herminha (Nunes) Nobrega, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Nobrega was formerly employed as a firefighter with the New Bedford Fire Department for 29 years until retirement in 1980.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of the Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had served on the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament Committee.
He enjoyed playing tennis, golf, ping pong, and cards.
Survivors include three brothers, Joseph Nobrega and his wife Dorothy, Americo "Mac" Nobrega, and Joaquim "Jack" Nobrega and his wife Barbara, all of New Bedford; his brother-in-law, Gilbert Fernandes of New Bedford; two nephews, David Nobrega and his wife Shannon and Joseph Nobrega and his companion Audrey; two nieces, Stephanie Bergeron and her husband Michael and Cynthia Lee and her companion Mark Linhares; a great-niece, Courtney Lee; and four great-nephews, Nicholas, Patrick, and Christopher Nobrega, and Jason Bergeron.
He was the the brother of the late Salome "Sally" Fernandes and brother-in-law of the late Sheila Nobrega.
The Liturgy of the Word and Final Commendation will be held on Thursday at 10 AM at St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery.
