Ruth (Reynolds) Markey, 102, of Fairhaven passed away peacefully on Saturday March 23, 2013 at Alden Court Nursing Home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Raymond D. Markey, a former New Bedford City Treasurer.
Born in Haverhill, the daughter of the late William and Lucretia (Gabriel) Reynolds, she lived in New Bedford for most of her life before moving to Fairhaven. She summered at her cottage on Sconticut Neck for many years.
Upon the death of her husband, Mrs. Markey assumed the ownership of Markey Monument Company which she operated for many years.
She was loved by all and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, William R. Markey and his wife Norma of Fairhaven, Deacon Paul G. Markey and his wife Louise of Billerica, Gayle Markey of Florida, Lucretia Murphy and her husband Philip of North Carolina, Margaret Stroud and her husband Thomas of Baldwinville, MA, and Elaine Desmond and her husband Gary of Pennsylvania; 25 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 AM at St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
