Claire (Twomey) Varney, 91, of Manchester, formerly of Bedford, died March 21, 2013 at the Courville of Manchester surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Biddeford, ME on August 12, 1921, the daughter of Jeremiah and Corinne (Gonneville) Twomey. After the death of her mother at a young age, Claire was raised by Thomas and Margery Welch from the age of 12.
She attended the local schools and graduated from Brewer High School.
Claire had worked for many years at Western Union in Bangor, ME where she met her future husband Willard.
Always very social and active, Claire was especially proud of her Maine heritage. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and Godmother who cherished time spent with her family.
She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Willard P. Varney in 1998. She was also predeceased by her lifelong friend Mary Catherine Wood.
Family members include her daughter Sue Devine and husband Daniel of Manchester; one son, Thomas Varney and wife Judith of Hingham, MA; three granddaughters, Julie Devine, Sarah Varney and Eliza Graham; her Godchild, Nancy (Twomey) Nicholson of Hamilton, MA; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday, March 25, 2013 in St. Elizabeth Seton Church, Meetinghouse Road, Bedford. Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
