Carl Eugene Horton, 89, of Tifton died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Tift Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2013, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Rev. John Cone will officiate with burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Mr. Horton’s grandsons, Thomas Horton, Robbie Horton, Michael Brogdon and David Horton, Jr., along with Ronnie Griner, Rocky Griner and Al Junior Horton, will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 23, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
Mr. Horton was born on December 6, 1923 in Eastman and was the son of William David Horton and Jewel Lorance Cobbie Horton, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Mae Haralson Horton, who died on January 12, 2013; one son, Richard Eugene Horton; two daughters, Doris Marie Horton and Ellen Lorance Horton Brogdon; one brother, A. H. Horton; and one grandson, “Little Richard” Long. He was retired from UGA as an electrician and was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Tifton. He joined the United States Navy in 1945; did his basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois with the 116th Seabees; did his advanced training in Providence, Rhode Island with the 6th Marine Division; and served in Sasabo, Japan.
Mr. Horton is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Carl David, Sr. and Barbara Horton of Tifton; one brother, Robert Horton of Tifton; one sister, Evelyn Farmer of Tifton; eight grandchildren, Carl David Horton Jr., David Eugene Horton, James Robley Horton, Michael Ottis Brogdon, Cynthia Marie Plair, Jessie Lee Horton, Sue Ellen Warren and Thomas Eugene Horton; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
