Richard P. Twomey, 79, of South Grafton, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. He was the beloved husband of Barbara A. (Keaveny) Twomey for almost 56 years.
Born in Brighton on March 5, 1934, he was the son of the late John and Ann (O’Brien) Twomey.
Mr. Twomey grew up in Brighton and graduated from the former St. Columbkille’s High School. He was a resident of South Grafton for the past 8 years and had formerly resided in Medway for 23 years and Appleton, WI for 11 years, prior to that.
Mr. Twomey was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and proudly served his country. For more than 45 years, Dick spent his life doing what he loved; selling and talking! His level of expertise was not focused on just the sale but also with the personal side of the deal- and because of that, he not only earned his customers respect and admiration but also their lifelong friendships.
Anyone who knows Dick, knows that his life was all about giving to others. He instilled this trait in his children, not always by their choice. When discipline needed to be handed out (and this happened often in the Twomey household), he “volunteered” his children to support causes that were near and dear to his heart.
Dick was an active parishioner of St. Joseph Parish in Medway and had served as a CCD teacher and volunteer usher. He was one of the co-founders of the Medway Food Pantry and he also volunteered at the Grafton Food Pantry.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Donna Swanson and her husband Bruce of Appleton, Kathleen Wiesner and her husband Robert Dealy of Marblehead, Richard Twomey and his wife Kristine of Appleton, Michelle Sanford and her husband Joseph of Uxbridge and Erin Mruk and her husband Steven of La Plata, MD.
He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Curt, Christopher, Kellie, Emily, Lauren, Sean, Claire, Caroline and James, a great-grandson Noah, a sister Eileen Twomey of Brighton and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by seven siblings, John, Anna, James, Mary, William, Robert and Patricia.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral on Monday, March 18 from the Ginley Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber St. in Medway at 9:15 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, 151 Village St. in Medway at 10 a.m.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
As the ultimate Irish honor, Dick’s calling hours will be on St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17th from 2 - 4 and 6 – 8 p.m at Ginley Crowley Funeral Home.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in Mr. Twomey’s memory to the Medway Food Pantry, 600 Mahan Circle, Medway, MA 02053.
