Keenan, Philip J., of Quincy, formerly of South Boston, passed away peacefully March 13, 2013, at the age of 86, surrounded by his loving family.
Beloved husband of 57 years to Loretta D. Keenan (Donovan). Devoted father of Chief Paul Keenan (QPD) and his wife Karen of Hanover, Matthew Keenan (QFD) and his wife Sandy of Hanover, Christine Koch and her husband Mayor Thomas of Quincy, Senator John Keenan and his wife Jeanne of Quincy, Joanne Nachatelo and her husband Marvin of Billerica, James Keenan and his wife Erica of Quincy, and Catherine Maloney and her husband Michael of Hanover. Also survived by his sisters in law, Gertrude Keenan of Reading, and Frances “Bunny” Otowchits of Framingham. Brother of the late Thomas Keenan of Falmouth, Dennis Keenan of Weymouth, Emily Moore of Franklin, Dorothy DiGianfelice of Roslindale, Joseph Warren Keenan of Arlington, Robert Keenan of Roslindale, and Rita Martin of Leavenworth, KS. Also survived by 20 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Born in Roxbury, Phil’s parents passed away when he was just six years old. He was raised by his loving brothers and sisters, moving to the Old Harbor Housing Project in South Boston. He went to work at the age of sixteen, and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944, joining his four brothers in the service of his beloved country during WWII. After the War, Phil worked as a newspaper mailer at the Record American, Boston Mailers Union Local 1. He worked nights at the Record American, and then the Boston Herald, for 52 years, retiring in 2003. He married Loretta Donovan in 1956, and together they raised seven children in Quincy. Phil’s family was his life. He so loved and was proud of his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. He was the loving “Papa” to his 20 grandchildren. He enjoyed breakfast daily with his good friends at Mckays in Quincy and Jimmy’s Diner in Weymouth.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday, March 17th from 2 - 7 p.m. in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St, Quincy.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. on Monday, March 18th, prior to the Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, Quincy at 11 a.m.
Interment at the Pine Hill Cemetery, Quincy.
