Obituary

Mary E. (Braley) Houghton, 87, of New Bedford died March 9, 2013 at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home.
She was the wife of the late Allan R. Houghton.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late George F. and Ellen C. (Peckham) Braley, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.
Mrs. Houghton was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church and taught Catechism and volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother in the past.
She was formerly employed as a teacher at New Bedford Vocational High School for 15 years before retiring from New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School. Mrs. Houghton previously taught at Stonington High School and Ware High School, both in Connecticut.
She was a graduate of Holy Family High School, class of 1943 and Framingham State Teachers College, class of 1947.
Mrs. Houghton was a member of The Friends of Buttonwood Park and a friend of Lawler Library. She enjoyed reading, traveling, her garden, the company of her dog Violet and family get togethers.
Survivors include her son, Michael Houghton and his wife Andrea of Westport; a daughter, Kathleen Woodacre of New Bedford; 3 grandchildren, Rebecca Woodacre, Jon Houghton and Meg Houghton.
She was the mother of the late Margaret Houghton.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 13th at 10 AM in St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours are omitted. Arrangements are with the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at www.panpac.org.
