Obituary

Captain George Adams age 92, formerly of Provincetown died March 1, 2013 in Boca Raton, FL. He was the husband of the late Victoria (Silva) Adams who died in 2001. As the oldest child, he left school at age 14 to help support his family as a mackerel fisherman. At 16 he became a mate on the Woods Hole research schooner. He joined the Navy at age 20 and earned the rank of Boatswain, first class. He served in the Navy from 1942 until 1945. Upon his discharge from the service, he returned to Provincetown and resumed fishing. In 1959 he caught, donated and displayed an anchor in Lopes square. He owned the F/V Victoria, was part owner of the F/V Deep Waters, and Captained the F/V Captain Bill for Joe Macara. For many years he captained scalloping boats for George Colley, Gerald Costa and Kenny Silva. He passed his knowledge of the fishing industry on to another generation of captains, mates, engineers and fisherman.
In 1965 he began spending most of the year in Florida. While in Florida he captained several different yachts and also had a yacht delivery service. For 13 years he was employed by Mr. Gene Staley, former president of General Motors. During his tenure he spent much of his time as Mr. Staley’s golf and cribbage partner.
Each year, he and his wife would return to Provincetown for the summer season where he enjoyed spending time with his brother Tom. He continued sport fishing until he was in his 80s on boats from Provincetown to Wellfleet and was the mate for his friend Manny Phillips for many years.
He and Tom enjoyed restoring an army jeep and driving it in local parades on the Outer Cape. His other hobby was making twine belts.
His survivors include his son George of Eastham, his daughter Vicky Adams of Boca Raton, his 4 grandchildren, Geoff, Jeremy, Tim and Chris, his great grandsons, Joel and Devin and his brother Tom Adams of Wellfleet and his sister Dot Gaspie of Milwaukee, WI and numerous other family members.
He is predeceased by his loving wife Victoria, his brothers Ernest, Richard, Wally and Howard Adams and his baby son Manuel.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday March 9, 2013 at 10:00am in the chapel of St. Peter Cemetery in Provincetown. Visiting hours are Friday 4:00-7:00PM at the Gately Funeral Home 94 Harry Kemp Way Provincetown.
