VanDALINDA, Catherine R. (Holtz), of Winthrop, passed away on Sat, March 2, 2013. Beloved wife of the late John J. VanDalinda, Lt. WPD. Devoted mother of Regina M. “Jeanie” Doucette and her husband Henry L. of Winthrop and The Villages, FL. Adored grandmother of Andrea M. Doucette of Greenfield, MA. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on Oct. 9, 1918, Kay was the daughter of the late Catherine M. (Mulholland) and Fredrick R. Holtz. Dear sister of the late Francis X. O’Reilly, William J. Holtz, and Leonore Jacobson. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home 210 Winthrop St. WINTHROP, on Thurs, March 7 at 9am. A Funeral Mass will be held in St. John the Evangelist Church at 10am. Relatives and friends are invited. Interment will be in Winthrop Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Weds. only between 4-8pm. Catherine was a graduate of Resurrection Elementary School and Saint Brendan High School in Brooklyn, NY. On Dec 8, 1942, she enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. She trained in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and was assigned to the USCG District in Boston where some of her duties included those of storekeeper and payroll typist. She attended Officer Candidate School and was promoted to the rank of Ensign and worked in the Finance Office in Palm Beach, FL. At the end of the war, she was discharged on Jan 31, 1946. Kay was a late employee of N.E. Telephone Co. and Suffolk Downs. She was a member of the American Legion-Winthrop Post #146. Kay’s family would like to extend many thanks to her caregivers, Bettie, Donna and Debbie, whose undying devotion and loving care allowed her to remain in her home for as long as she did.
