Obituary

Arthur Harry Ellum, age 73, died, February 28, 2013 from chronic pulmonary disease.

He was born January 10, 1940 in Bridgeport, CT, to Audrey and Arthur Ellum. He graduated from Wyoming Seminary High School, Johnson State College with a BS in Education, Keene State College with an M.Ed. in Special Education and Industrial Education, and Colorado State University on an EDPA Fellowship with a Ph.D in Technical Education Administration. He also attended the Culinary Institute of America.

Arthur served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve for sixteen years and the New Hampshire National Guard A Battery 3/197th Field Artillery for four years.

Arthur served the youth of Vermont and New Hampshire as an educator for over thirty years. Arthur taught Special Education in Johnson, VT and Keene, NH. He worked as the Title 1 and Special Education Director in Epping, NH. He was employed as Special Education Consultant and as Director of Professional Development with the New Hampshire Department of Education for over ten years. During that time, he was also a Lecturer at St. Anselm's College where he taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Special Education. He was the Executive Director of Adult and Technical Education at the Manchester School of Technology. He was the Vocational Technical Director at the Berlin Regional Technology Center from 1983 until his retirement in 2003.

Arthur was a member of the NH Vocational Education Association; American Vocational Association; NH Council of Secondary Administrators of Vocational Education; New and Returning Vocational Teacher Advisory Council, Keen State College; Berlin Technical College Advisory Board; and past president of the Berlin Gorham Rotary Club International. He was a member of the New England Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. Arthur received a personal commendation from Governor Meldrim Thompson for exemplary performance as the State Administrator of CETA and the Manpower Services Program. He also received an award from the NH State Council for Vocational-Technical Education for "Significant Contributions to Vocational Education in New Hampshire." On his retirement in 2003, Arthur was particularly proud of receiving from the NH State Department of Education a proclamation stating June 13 as Arthur H. Ellum Education Day and identified him as the father of the NH Twenty Area Vocational Center concept.

Arthur is survived by his wife Mary Addario Anderson Ellum and six children: Kristine Anderson Francoeur, her husband Roger, and their sons, Ryan and Nathan of Londonderry, NH; David Ellum and his daughter, Mairi of Concord, NH; Mark Anderson and his husband Christopher Dowd of Washington, DC; Peter Ellum and his wife Lisa of Denver, NC; Karla Anderson Danais, her husband Michael, and their children Emma, Samuel, and William of Tuftonboro, NH; Sara Anderson Ebie and her husband Jeremy of Washington, DC. Two sisters, Audrey Pociask, and Betsy Smith of Georgia.

Arthur enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, boating, cooking and traveling. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends.

A Memorial service was held on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 in the Chapel at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St, Manchester with Gary Rolph Chaplin of the Veterans Admistration officiating.
