Obituary

William Francis Weir Jr., 69, a resident of Plainville for the past 45 years and former outstanding athlete from East Dedham, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his devoted family on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, after a prolonged illness. A loving husband, father and grandfather. He was the beloved husband of over 49 years to Louise F. (McKinnies) Weir.

Born August 31, 1943 in Norwood, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late William F. Weir Sr. and Margaret ( O’Brien ) Weir. Raised and educated in Dedham, he attended Dedham Public Schools and was a 1961 graduate of Dedham High School where he lettered in 3 major sports: football, hockey and baseball. Mr. Weir was employed for over 25 years with the American London company in Norwood and most recently for 17 years as a Maintenance Engineer for the former Southwood and current Norwood Hospitals. He was a communicant of St. Martha’s Church in Plainville.

An avid sports enthusiast, he was a longtime loyal supporter of King Philip High School athletics. He was a member of the PAL (Plainville Athletic League) for 18 years and also dedicated 25 years as an active coach/parent with the King Philip Pop Warner “Chiefs”, Dedham Pop Warner Football, and the Plainville Pop Warner “Packers”. He played men’s softball for over thirty years and then became an ASA umpire, officiating men’s softball leagues throughout the area. He also enjoyed playing golf in the Southwood Hospital Golf Leagues.

His fondest memories were of times spent with family and friends and his greatest pleasure was watching his grandchildren compete on their various sports teams. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving children, Doreen F. (Weir) Thibedeau and her husband Harold of Plainville, William F. Weir III and his wife Nancy of Wrentham, Michael F. Weir and his wife Erin of North Attleboro, James F. Weir and his wife Elaina of Attleboro and Patrick F. Weir and his wife Lisa also of North Attleboro. Other survivors include his brothers and sisters, Michael J. Weir of Dedham, Donna J. Guastali of Wrentham, Paul H. Weir of Dedham, Paula M. Olsen of Norwood and Kenneth F. Weir also of Dedham, 13 grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his brothers John L. Weir and Joseph E. Weir and his sister Margaret A. “Penny“ Smith.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, March 3, 2013 from 4 – 8 P.M. at the Sperry McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 4, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. in St. Martha’s Church, 227 South Street, Plainville. The Reverend Father Al Faretra officiating. All are welcome to attend. NOTE: Funeral procession to the church will form at the Sperry McHoul Funeral Home on Monday morning between 9 A.M. and 10 A.M. The Burial will be at the Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham, immediately following the funeral mass.
