SALEM - Edmund A. Wentworth, 81, husband of Carol A. (Palmer) Wentworth, of Billerica, formerly of Salem & Hamilton, died Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, after a brief illness that he handled with the utmost dignity.
Born in Jacksonville, Florida and raised and educated in Hamilton, he was the son of the late Hugh C. and Mildred F. (Hitchings) Wentworth.
A Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served aboard the USS Tripoli escort carrier and attained the rank of Fireman. He was extremely proud of his service to his country and loved to share those life experiences with all around him.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 32 years as a mechanical engineer for GTE Sylvania at the Loring Avenue, Salem plant and was a member of the GTE Sylvania Quarter Century Club.
With his wife, whom he met on a blind date in high school, and family, Edmund enjoyed traveling, cruising, and camping in the New Hampshire Lakes region. At the family’s camp in Farmington, NH, he was well known for assisting other campers with home repairs and various neighborhood projects.
After his retirement, Edmund and Carol began traveling by cruise ship to interesting places like Panama, Bermuda, and even cruised to Hawaii to view the Pearl Harbor memorial.
He was kind and compassionate and always quick with a joke or prank. He loved to sing and always had a smile on his face. He was an amazing and devoted husband, brother, dad, and grandfather whose loyalty never wavered. He will be very much missed by all who knew him.
Besides his wife with whom he was to celebrate 54 years of marriage in March, he is survived by one daughter, Heather Wentworth of Billerica, two grandchildren, Anthony Wentworth of Tewksbury, Rebecca Peterson of Billerica, a foster sister, Sandra Bell of Gloucester and a brother-in-law, James and his wife Linda Palmer of Burlington. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Arnold and David Wentworth, and sisters, Beverly Harris and Shirley Ackerman.
A visitation will be held Thursday, February 28, 2013, from 4-7 PM at the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 am in the funeral home, to be concluded with Military Honors by a Navy Honors Team. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
