Obituary

CHICOPEE – Arthur S. “Art” Hachey, 80, of the Fairview section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Saturday, February 16, 2013. He passed into Eternal Life at the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Tewksbury, Massachusetts on May 9, 1932, a beloved son of the late Thomas and Ida Joseph. He was raised in Tewksbury and in the Roxbury section of Boston, graduated from local schools and moved to the Fairview section of Chicopee in 1955. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country during the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Tech Sergeant and received the National Defense Service Medal. Following his military service, he returned to the area and was employed by the former Chemical Paper Company in Holyoke. He was later employed at the Pratt and Whitney Company in East Windsor, Connecticut and was last employed for over 30 years as a machine operator and wire drawer at the former Nonotuck Wire Company in South Hadley, before retiring in 1995. Active in his faith, he was a longtime communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. He was a longtime active member and Past Grand Knight of the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus in Chicopee where he volunteered at many of the council functions. He was also a member of Fairview Assembly 2670 Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus in Chicopee. He was a former member of the Granby American Legion and currently a member and Chaplain of the Fairview American Legion Post 438 in Chicopee. During his younger years, Art was a former Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 302 in South Hadley. Art was a loving man who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He leaves his devoted wife and best friend, Doris G. (Laverdiere) Hachey. They were married on December 26, 1955 at the former Precious Blood Church in Holyoke and were blessed with over 57 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving children, David S. Hachey of Chicopee, James V. DeLong of Tulsa, OK, Doreen G. Chamberlin and her husband, Larry, of Pocatello, ID, Mark E. DeLong of Derry, NH, Robert A. Hachey and his wife, Sue, of Stetson, ME and Diana M. Rugani and her husband, Bruce, of Vero Beach, FL; his 11 cherished grandchildren, Diana DeLong, Nathan DeLong, Brian Chamberlin, Crystalrose Pape and her husband, Ben, Joe Chamberlin and his wife, Camille, Tanya Stoflet, Jennifer Chamberlin, Cody DeLong and his fiancée, Verity Cushman, Nicole Hachey, Christopher Hachey and Daniel Rugani; his 17 cherished great-grandchildren; his dear sister, Dorothy Turcotte and her husband, Roger, of Winter Haven, FL; his brother, Raymond Joseph; and his many dear nephews and nieces. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his brothers, George Hachey and Louis Joseph who was Called Home on February 4, 2013; and his dear sister, Eleanor DeLong. His funeral will be held on Saturday morning, February 23, 2013 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020 (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with Military Honors will follow the Mass at Notre Dame Cemetery, 63 Lyman Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, February 22, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to either Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020 or to Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund, 1599 Memorial Drive, Chicopee, MA 01020.
