Obituary

WAYLAND: Esther Malcolm Onufrak, 89, of Tuftonboro, N.H. and formerly of Wayland passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 9, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.
She was born on November 5, 1923 in Cambridge, MA. Esther was the younger of two daughters born to Frederick Malcolm and Christina Boyd Malcolm. She was predeceased by her sister Christina Sallen.
Shortly after graduating from Belmont High School, Esther joined the United States Navy as a Wave. She was stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. It was there that she met her late husband Michael Onufrak, Jr. who was then serving in the United States Marine Corps. They were married for 57 years. Michael died on September 16, 2002.
Esther and Michael lived in Wayland for many years. After raising their children, she went to work for the Town of Wayland, the Wayland Town Crier, and became the Circulation Manager of Lawyers Weekly. She and Michael later retired to a beautiful home on Lake Winnipesauke in Tuftonboro, NH. Esther became largely involved in her community. She was President of the Ladies of the Lakes Quilting Guild. Her many hobbies included sewing, quilting, baking, reading and most of all being a loving mother and grandmother.
Esther was the beloved mother of Judith Detterman of Ashby; Michael D. Onufrak and his wife Janet and their children Fallon, Faith and Jillian of Natick; Susan Vater and her husband Kevin and her daughter Robin of Saugus; Brent Onufrak and his wife Gwen and their children Kaitlyn and Emily of Bellingham.
Visitations will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2013 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Rd (Off Rte 30), Wayland.
Her funeral services will be held on Monday, February 18, 2013 at 10:00 o’clock at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 53 Cochituate Road (Rte 27) Wayland.
Interment will be held at a later date in Townhouse Cemetery on Tuftonboro, NH.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Ste 1509, New York, NY 10018.
