Obituary

Hingham, MA- Gardner Dodge Hawkes, 92, a longtime resident of Hingham died Saturday, January 26th at the home of his daughter Barbara in Chelmsford. He was the husband of 58 years to the late Anabelle (Littleton) Hawkes who died in 1999.

He was born in Danvers on September 12, 1920, a son of the late Perley Gillette and Olivia M. (Pierce) Hawkes, received his education in Somerville and was a graduate of Somerville High School.

Prior to his retirement, he had worked for 25 years at the Suffolk Franklin Savings Bank in Boston. Earlier, he worked at Walsh and Packard Hardware Store in Hingham as well as the Hingham Shipyard. Gardner also served his country in the US Navy during World War II.

Gardner was definitely a handy-man taking care of the Hingham home for over 70 years; his main expertise was in woodworking, and in recent years he enjoyed making things for his loving grandchildren.

He was also an avid bowler and still bowling on two teams until recently.

Gardner is survived by his three children, Barbara Ann DeMings of Chelmsford, Muriel Jean Christopher of Fairfax, VA, and James Gardner Hawkes of Chicago, IL; seven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and a sister, Muriel McAnern of Andover. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thorndike “Ted” Hawkes and longtime friend, Jean Pearson.

It being his wish, there will be no visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service on February, 2 2013 at 2:00pm at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gardner’s name to Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Bldg. 9, Lawrence, MA 01843.
