Charles S. Tautkus, 85, of Hooksett and a longtime resident of Manchester, died January 25, 2013 at Concord Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born in Worcester, MA on April 30, 1927, one of five children, to Constantine and Benedicta Tautkus. He graduated from North High School in Worcester then served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He later graduated from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY where he met his lovely bride, Sarah J. Burke.
Charles was a general agent with John Hancock Insurance Company for over 35 years in New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.
An avid outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed skiing, hiking, golf and his beloved BMW’s and Porsche. He was a long-time season pass holder at Cannon Mountain where he won a contest to name Profile Trail and was featured on the Ski 93 brochure. He was also a long-time member of the Manchester Country Club.
The family includes his wife of 59 years, Sarah (Burke) Tautkus of Hooksett; six children, Gerard Tautkus and his wife, Siobhan, of Manchester, Mary Winslow and her husband, Matt, of Newbury, Ann Hanson and her husband, Tighe, of Harwich, MA, James Tautkus and his wife, Barbara, of York, PA, Sarah “Sally” Tautkus of Hooksett and Charles Tautkus Jr. and his wife, Erin Hattan, of Laconia; ten grandchildren whom he adored; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Helen Foley, a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Tautkus and his faithful golden retriever, Beauregard.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at St. Catherine Church, corner of Webster and Hemlock streets, Manchester.
