Obituary

Jack C. Levergood
March 30, 1917-January 21, 2013

Jack C. Levergood of Laconia, formerly of Tuftonboro, passed away peacefully at the Taylor Community in Laconia on January 21, five days after the passing of his wife, Anne Turko Levergood. He was 95 years old. Jack was born in Williamsport PA, the older of two boys born to Lester and Margaret Clark Levergood. His mother died when he was six years old, his father and his stepmother Josephine raised him primarily in New Jersey. As a youth, he taught swimming and was a member of the Sea Scouts. He graduated from Union High School in 1935 and then attended the College of Engineering in Newark, NJ. He worked for Western Electric in Kearny NJ during the day, while he went to school at night, earning his engineering degree in 1950.

He married Anne Turko in 1942, a marriage that would last over 70 years. The young couple initially lived in a small apartment in Union. Jack took in his mother-in-law for the first several years of his marriage. During this time, he was building a house in Stanton, New Jersey, finishing it just in time to be transferred by Western Electric from Kearny to North Andover, MA. The couple moved to Haverill MA.

Once in Massachusetts the couple became involved in volunteer work. Jack became a lifetime member of the Pioneers at Western Electric, also a Mason, and president of the Haverill YMCA. They bought a camp on Lake Winnepasaukee and Jack became involved as a volunteer at Huggins Hospital as well as a driver for Meals on Wheels. In 2002 Jack was presented with a National and Community Service Award for his dedication to volunteer service.

As a Republican, he was a Platinum Honoree and Member of the Republican Presidential Task Force and a Charter Member of the George W. Bush Presidential Center, Library and Museum. He was a faithful member of the Melvin Village Community Church where he served as a deacon for many years.

Jack had many good friends with whom he and Anne shared adventures, jokes, celebrations, golf, and sailing. He also enjoyed woodworking, painting, bird watching, and seeing Notre Dame lose at football. To his family and friends he was a kind and gentle man who made all feel loved. His nieces, Eleanor Pringle of Higganum Ct and her family, Pat Craig of Methuen MA and her family, Joan Churchill of Exeter, as well as his nephew Alexander Williams of Pueblo CO and his family, and many grand nieces and nephews will miss him. His very dear family friends, Carol, Dianne, and Laurel Luby, and his caregiver, Joyce Wood, also survive him. His brother, James, and his nephew, James Jr, predeceased him.

The burial will be private. A celebration of Jack and Anne’s lives and marriage will be held at the Melvin Village Community Church on Saturday May 4 at 11 am. Memorial contributions can be made to the church.
