Obituary

Huff, Commander Mahlon S. 85, passed away Wednesday January 23, 2013 at the Emeritus at Stonecreek Lodge. Native of Midland, Michigan, Mahlon was the son of Ferne S. Huff (school teacher) and Edwin G. Huff (school principal). He committed to be an Air Force pilot straight out of high school, but was released from that commitment when WW II ended and there was no longer a need for pilots. He later enlisted in the Army, but was released early from boot camp when he was accepted to the US Naval Academy, graduating in 1950. He was a Navy Pilot, veteran of the Korean War, and served on the USS Midway. Mahlon’s postgraduate work earned him 2 more baccalaureate degrees, the last from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. After retiring from the Navy, Mahlon taught JROTC at Valley High School for approximately 15 years followed by teaching for USC at military bases in NC, NY, Korea, and Japan. Survivors include his wife of 60 years. C. June (Spoolstra) Huff; three children, Craig Shepard Huff (Pamela), Kimberly Blackwell (Brad) and Marta Renn (Donald); seven grandchildren, Veronica, Robbie, Matthew, Andrew, Elizabeth, Tristan and Jered; a great granddaughter, Adelaide. Memorial services will be held 3:00 pm Sunday at the Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Hwy. Memorial visitation will be 1:00 – 3:00 pm Sunday. Memorial gifts may be made to Alzheimers Association or Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
