Rose D. (Cummins) Keene, age 96, of Norton passed away in the presence of her loving family on Monday, January 14, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Attleboro.
She was the beloved wife of the late Benton W. Keene, Sr. to whom she was wed for 67 years at the time of his death in 2004.
Born in Dallas City, Pennsylvania on October 30, 1916, she was the dear daughter of the late Elmer Cummins and the late Anton and Estella (Randall) Larson.
At a young age, Rose’s family moved to Attleboro. She was educated in Attleboro schools and was a 1935 graduate of Attleboro High School. She also attended the former Sturdy Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.
A resident of Norton for over 70 years, Mrs. Keene had formerly worked in the mailroom at the former Metals & Controls in Attleboro. She had also been employed at the former Fernandes Supermarkets and at T. J. Holmes in Norton.
Rose’s family was the focal point of her life. She treasured the times spent at family gatherings, especially those with her grandchildren.
She was a member of the Chartley United Methodist Church in Norton. Rose enjoyed traveling, and socializing at the Norton Senior Center. She was an avid bingo player and also loved playing cards with friends.
She is survived by her devoted children, Retired Norton Police Chief Benton W. Kenne, Jr. and his wife Peggy of Norton, Janice R. Eddleston and her husband Bob of Norton, A. Thomas Keene and his wife Sharon of North Attleboro and the late Susan Wilson. She was the sister of the late Wilbur Cummins and Geraldine Cummings and is also survived by her cherished 12 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 1 great-great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Friday, January 18th at 11 A.M. at the Chartley United Methodist Church, 76 South Worcester St., Norton. Private burial will be held at a later date at the Norton Common Cemetery in Norton.
Visitation will be held on Friday morning at the church prior to the services beginning at 10:00 A.M. A reception will also be held at the church at the conclusion of services.
In lieu of flowers, Rose’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to the Norton Senior Center, P.O. Box 552, Norton, MA 02766.
