Obituary

John C. Monaghan, Jr., 56, died June 30, 2004 from a fall while working as a rigger on the USS Constitution in Boston, MA. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 6, 1948, he was the son of John and Ellen Monaghan of Goleta, CA. John spent his formative years in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, graduated from Providence College in 1970 and earned his Masters Degree in 1985 from New Hampshire College. He was employed by Hadco/Sanmina-SCI for 31 years as an Engineering Manager before changing careers in September 2003 to become a Rigger on the USS Constitution, fulfilling a life time dream. John was a volunteer on the Friendship of Salem for the past four years where he gained the skills required to become a rigger. John enjoyed carving, motorcycles, and both hard and soft water sailing.

The family includes his wife of 32 years, Denise, of Candia, NH, two sons, Ross of Grantham, NH, Matthew of Candia, five sisters Kathleen Cooney of Greenbelt, Md., Patricia Holcomb of La Mesa, CA, Marguerite Frolli and Mary Monaghan of Goleta, CA, Monica Scafide of Santa Barbara, CA, four brothers, Louis of Vernon, CT, Charles of Canton, MA, Joseph of Norton, MA, and Timothy of Sacremento, CA.

Following cremation, memorial calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 7th from 3 - 5pm at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry, NH. Funeral services will follow at 5:00pm in the funeral home. John's cremated remains will be spread on the Atlantic Ocean at a date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Schooner Ernestina Commission, PO Box 2010, New Bedford, MA 02741, where John received sail training. The contributions will be used to fund their children's trainingprogram. Please include John's name on your contribution.
