Obituary

Michael Gatheral, 90, of New Bedford died January 8, 2013 at Sacred Heart Home.
He was the husband of the late Shirley E. (Matos) Gatheral.
Born in Bay Bulls, Newfoundland, the son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Doyle) Gatheral, he had lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
He was formerly employed as a commercial fisherman on several vessels of the New Bedford fleet before his retirement.
Mr. Gatheral served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 3rd Armored Division, participating in the Battles and Campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Pvt. A. Poirier Post 3260.
Survivors include his daughter, Carol Lizotte and her husband Leonard of New Bedford; a brother, Raymond Gatheral of California; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 11th at 9:30 AM in Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford. His family will receive guests on Friday from 8:30 - 9:30 AM prior to his service. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
