Obituary

NATICK: Leora L. (Allen) Hewitt, age 90, a gracious lady who loved her family and her faith, died peacefully on Thursday, January 3, 2013, at the Kathleen Daniels Nursing Center in Framingham. She was the devoted wife of the late John Martin Hewitt who died just less than one year ago.

Born, raised and educated in Natick, she was one of the six daughters of John P. and Mary E. (Driscoll) Allen. A very close knit family, the Allen sisters and their brother John shared fun-filled Thanksgivings and Christmases with their growing families well into their senior years.

Leora was employed with Fannie Farmer Confectioners until a young soldier named John swept her off her feet. They wed in 1943 and she moved with him to bases near his various assignments for the duration of the war. The couple then lived briefly in Dover prior to settling in Ashland. Leora enjoyed making a warm and loving home for her husband and son. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for a number of years and had volunteered to inoculate students at Ashland High School with the Polio vaccine, an act of selflessness that rightly impresses her son to this day. A devout Catholic and active member of Saint Cecelia’s Parish, she and John spent much of their retirement at their second home on the Bass River, boating, fishing and enjoying each other’s company.

She is survived by her son, John P. Hewitt and his wife Kathy of Milford; three adored grandchildren, Mark Hewitt and his wife Erin of Canton, Melissa Burnham and her husband Rodney of Milford and Robert Hewitt, also of Milford; two great-granddaughters, Brandy and Kylie; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, John Allen, Gladys Lawn, Dorothy Bishop, Frances Lincoln, Margaret Forsythe, and Phyllis Letezia.

Her funeral will be from the John Everett & sons Funeral Home, 4 Park Street at Natick Common, Natick, on Tuesday, January 8th at 9:00a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Patrick’s Church, 44 East Central Street, Natick, at 10:00a.m. Burial will follow at Saint Patrick’s Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday 5 – 8p.m.
Donations may be made in Leora’s memory to the Natick VNA, 209 West Central St., Natick, MA 01760.
