Charles L. Kotekas, 88, of Manchester died July 2, 2004 at Villa Crest Retirement Community after a period of failing health.
Born in Manchester on January 31, 1916, he was the son of Lazarus and Helen (Demadis) Kotekas. As a child he was taken to Greece when his family returned there. He later returned to America and established a long and fulfilling life in Manchester.
During World War II he served in the US Army as a member of the Third Infantry Division and was involved in the campaigns in the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Rome Arno Theatre.
In his younger years he was a New England Champion Gold Glove boxer. He had worked as a foreman with his wife at B & C Shoe Company and later owned and operated Rosebud Superette in Manchester for over 25 years.
Mr. Kotekas was a lifetime member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He served that church in many capacities including being a member of the board of directors and as purchasing agent for all church related functions including the Glendi Festival from 1992 to the present.
He received the St. George Cathedral Award and the Diocese Laity Award both for outstanding service and dedication to the community of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
The family includes his wife of 68 years, Evangeline (Pavlidis) Kotekas of Manchester; a son, Lewis C. Kotekas of Manchester; two sisters, Stamatia Malatras of Manchester and Effie Kalaigides of Greece; nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held Wednesday July 7, 2004 at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 650 Hanover St., Manchester. Rev. Peter Chamberas officiated. Burial followed at Pine Grove Cemetery, Calef Rd., Manchester.
