Obituary

Delcie (Courson) Atherton, 89, of Whitman, passed away on January 2nd after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Gilfred ”Gilly” E. Atherton.

She was born and brought up in Elizabethtown, NC, daughter of the late William and Marie (Kinlaw) Courson. She was a graduate of Elizabethtown High School.

Delcie was a proud veteran of the United States Navy during World War II joining at age eighteen.

She has been a Whitman resident for over 65 years, a communicant of the former First Baptist Church of Whitman and worked as a secretary for the former Thom McCann Shoe Company before retiring.

Delcie was well known for walking all over town and was friends with everyone. She also enjoyed needlepoint and caring for her granddaughter Kelsey. She was the epitome of a true southern belle. She was “Granny” to all that knew her.

She is survived by her daughter Melodye Atherton-Beattie, her husband Craig and her granddaughter Kelsey Beattie all of Putnam, CT.; her sister Sylvia Brady of NC.; one niece and two nephews in NC. She was also the sister of the late Nannette Dollar.

Her visitation will be held on Sunday, January 6th from 2 – 6PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel. Burial will be held in North Carolina at a later date. Donations may be made in her name to the Whitman Rescue Squad, c/o Whitman Fire Dept., PO Box 168, Whitman, MA 02382
