Obituary

COCHITUATE: Herbert C. Ross, 90, died unexpectedly on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at the MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham after being stricken at his home earlier in the day.
He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on December 22, 1922 the son of the late Herbert Ross and Charlotte E. (Carrothers) Ross.
Mr. Ross was the beloved husband of the late Ellen T. (Dalton) Ross who died on May 30, 2004. He was the devoted father of Ellen R. Ingerman and her husband Steven of New York City, NY: Herbert C. Ross, Jr. and his wife Ann McCreary of Millwood, NY; Barbara Ena DeMauro and her husband Michael of Framingham; William T. Ross and his wife Anne Marsh of Woburn and Margaret M. Ross of New York City, NY. Beloved grandfather of Christine M. (DeMauro) Corazzini and her husband Carl of Framingham; Jill Ross of Lusaka, Zambia and Mary Ross of New York City, NY. Also survived by 11 nieces and five nephews.
Herb has been a resident of Cochituate for 62 years and previously resided in Northern Ireland and Jamaica Plain. He was a graduate of Jamaica Plain High School with the Class of 1941 and a member of their military drill team. He served his country proudly during World War II with the 775th Tank Battalion with the United States Army as a Technician 4th Grade. He was in the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign in New Guinea and Luzon and received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.
He had a long and distinguished career as a Letter Carrier with the United States Postal Service in Natick. For 56 years he has been a member of Branch 362 of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Herb was a lifelong reader, especially of history and nature and kept up with current events by reading the daily paper, periodicals and watching PBS. He was a man of intellect and thought for himself and always treated others with respect, a kind word and good cheer. He enriched the lives of many people whom he met throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed music, woodworking, being outdoors, late Roman and Byzantine history and following sports. He avidly followed middle and long distance running, the English Premier League, Serie A, and was knowledgeable about boxing especially during the 1950’s era. He enjoyed Harvard, Natick and Wayland football, Woburn High School hockey and the New England Patriots. Herb will be greatly missed by all his family who were the most important part of his life.
Visitations will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Rd (Off Rte 30), Cochituate Village, Wayland.
His funeral services will be held on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 10:30 AM at the funeral home.
Interment will follow in the Ross family lot in Lakeview Cemetery in Cochituate.
