Obituary

Alba Assunta (Bernardi) Jameson, 89, recently of Needham, MA, longtime resident of Wellesley, MA, died on December 29, 2012, after a long illness. Alba was born at her family home in Wellesley and was a 1941 graduate of Wellesley High School. She also attended Wellesley College, where she graduated with honors in Italian literature in 1945. She remained an active and faithful alumna of the college throughout the years. She served on several long-range planning committees; co-founded Wellesley’s Peace and Justice Studies program with her husband, the late Paul Jameson, Esq., and Wellesley alumna Kitty Gladstone; and in later years attended Italian classes at the college as an auditor. Each week she baked cookies for the class and carried them up to Founders Hall, and at the end of each semester she cooked an elaborate meal of northern Italian cuisine for all the students and their professor. Alba was also an activist in the Town of Wellesley, where she served for many years as a Girl Scout leader to both her daughters’ troops, worked as a substitute teacher in the Wellesley Public Schools for 26 years and was a member of the League of Women Voters. A lover of nature, Alba enjoyed spending summers in the Berkshires as a child, watching the deer that came to feed at her home, and hunting for shells along the beach in Sanibel, Florida. She spent many autumns in Tuscany with her husband and returned to the Berkshires for several summers, where she painted watercolor landscapes. She and Paul were happily married for 53 years. Alba was the loving mother of Nancy (Jameson) Russell and her husband, Edward J. Russell, of Wallingford, CT, and Christina Jameson and her husband, Robert M. Bloom, of West Newton, MA. She was the devoted grandmother of Thomas E. Russell of Keene, NH, Jessica J. (Russell) Williams of Duxbury, MA, Eben J. Russell of Carmel, CA, Martha E. Bloom of Boston, MA and David J. Bloom of Boston, MA and great-grandmother of Nathaniel, Lauren, Claire, Caroline, Liam, Teddy and Matthew. She was predeceased by her parents, Domenic M. Bernardi and Nancy Bernardi, who immigrated to America from Boccassuolo, Italy and settled in Wellesley. Domenic was a well known contractor in the town and built Alba Road. Alba was the loving sister of Arlene T. (Bernardi) Vecchi of Sherborn, MA, sister-in-law of the late Antonio Vecchi and aunt of Charles V. Vecchi of Millis, MA, Robert D. Vecchi of Needham, MA and their wives and children. Both sisters lived on Alba Road and raised their children there. They also shared summers in Manomet (Plymouth). Alba was also the loving aunt of Robert W. Cooper, Herbert (Bert) W. Cooper IV, Larry Jameson, Frederick Jameson, Kathleen (Jameson) Moult, Peter Jameson, Paul Jameson and Sally (Jameson) Davis. Alba also leaves several dear friends, including Edith (Shapero) Alpers and Dottie Cook of Natick, MA and Martha (Bothfeld) Hartmann of Skillman, NJ. Arrangements were by George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Homes. A private burial took place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellesley. Donations in Alba’s memory may be made to the Wellesley College Peace and Justice Studies program, 106 Central Street, Wellesley, MA 02481, the Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2042 Beacon Street, Waban, MA 02468 or a charity of your choice.
