Augusta – Mr. Donald Edwin Akins, 75, beloved husband of Elaine Akins, entered into rest on Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at University Hospital.
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 28, 2012 at 2:00 PM at West Acres Baptist Church with Pastor Denny Mack officiating. Mr. Akins will lie in state in the church sanctuary one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mr. Akins was a veteran of the United States Army National Guard and had retired as a manager from Big Star and Gurley’s Supermarket. He was a member of West Acres Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Praise Bible Study Class. He loved motorcycles, woodcarving and researching his family genealogy. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family, who he loved very much.
In addition to Elaine, his wife of 53 years, he is survived by his daughters, DeLaine “Dee Dee” Akins Sullivan (Byron) and Krista Elaine Hammett (Wayne) both of Martinez. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Blair, Whitney, Haley, Heather, Dylan, Brett and Brooke, as well as numerous loving cousins.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Praise Bible Study Class.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, December 27, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
The family would like to thank Dr. David Allen and the staff at University Hospice for the care shown to Mr. Akins during his illness.
