Obituary

Hazel Hocking, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away on Monday, December 24, 2012 at the Medway Country Manor. Hazel was an elegant, intelligent, caring and kind woman who deeply loved her family and friends and who saw the good in everyone. Hazel was born on March 29, 1915 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Thomas H. and Martha (Blewett) Dunn of Cornwall, England where she lived until 1975 at which time she moved to Bellingham, MA.

Hazel was raised by her parents to work hard, value education and to love the gospel of Jesus Christ. She spent most of her free time serving her church. For many years, she taught Sunday school, was a choir member, directed the youth choir and served on the women’s guild at the Church of Peace in Brooklyn. Upon moving to Bellingham she continued her service at the Medway Community Church where she also taught Sunday school and was active in many church groups. She was a member of the International Order of The King’s Daughters. She also believed in giving back to her community by serving on the board of the former Friends of Bellingham Seniors and was a member of the Bellingham Council of Aging. She worked as a receptionist at the Nassau Federal Savings and Loan Assoc. in Brooklyn until her retirement in 1975.

She was the loving wife of the late Reginald Hocking who died in 1967. She is survived by two daughters, Jane Knief and her husband Edward Knief of Bellingham, MA and Nan E. Johnson of Wantagh, NY, the late William Johnson, six grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service at the Medway Community Church, 193 Main Street in Medway on Saturday, December 29 at 10 a.m.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 3 – 6 p.m. in the Ginley Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber Street in Medway.

Graveside service will take place in Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn on Monday, December 31 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Hocking’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049.
