SUDBURY: Luella Melba (Shepard) Place, 93, of Sudbury died peacefully at home on December 22, 2012 surrounded by her loving family.
Ella was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada on November 6, 1919 the daughter of the late Llewellyn Shepard and Julia (Hilliard) Shepard.
She moved to “the states” in her late teens and there she met and married Irving Place in 1941. Ella and Irving enjoyed 50 years of marriage until Irving’s death in October of 1991. They lived in Wayland until 1952 then moved to Sudbury where she has resided for the past 61 years.
Ella leaves nine children: Julia Patz and her husband Stan of New York City, New York; Robert Place and his wife Jan of Marlborough; Midge Helms of Sudbury; John Place and his wife Millie of Rutland; George Place and his wife Harriet of Bourne; Dorothy Finnerty of Huntersville, North Carolina; Donna Ferree and her husband John of Hebron, Connecticut; Marcia Place and her partner Kathy of Hudson; Russell Place and his wife Jacqui of Hudson. She also leaves 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed gardening, watching birds and playing bingo. But her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 and 8:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Rd (Off Rte 30), Wayland.
Funeral Services and interment will be private for the family.
In lieu of flowers, her family suggests that donations in Ella’s memory may be sent to the Sudbury Senior Center, 40 Fairbanks Road, Sudbury, MA 01776.
