Obituary

CHICOPEE – Renate E. (Hundrieser) Lavoie, 80, of the Fairview section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Friday, December 21, 2012. She passed into Eternal Life at Holyoke Medical Center surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Ebenrode, East Prussia, Germany on June 26, 1932, a beloved daughter of the late Hermann and Elisabeth (Urbschat) Hundrieser. She was raised in Germany and married her husband, Bob on June 15, 1959 in Bremerhaven, Germany while he was serving in the United States Air Force. In 1966, Renate came to the United States with her husband while he was stationed at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, DC and in 1971, they settled in the Fairview section of Chicopee while he was stationed at Westover Air Force Base. She became a proud citizen of the United States of America on September 18, 1987 and then immediately went to Chicopee City Hall to become a registered voter. During her early years in Fairview, she was employed at Zayre Department Store on Memorial Drive in Fairview. She was later a home health aide for the elderly and a housekeeper at Saint Anne Rectory in Chicopee. Active in her faith, Renate was a longtime communicant of Saint Anne Church in Fairview. She served her parish as an usher, greeter and lector. She was also a member of the Saint Anne Sodality, a member of the parish visiting group to welcome new parishioners and was the Chairperson of the People’s Loving Group of the Parish. She was a quiet woman who adored her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She leaves her beloved husband and best friend of 53 years, Robert J. Lavoie; her five loving children, Erik Hundrieser of West Hollywood, CA, Andrea S. Quinn and her husband, Brian of Springfield, Robert J. Lavoie and his wife, Dee of Seal Harbor, ME, Ronald T. Lavoie and his spouse, Matthew Vicalvi of Chicopee and Renate-Marie Riley and her husband, John of Chesterfield; her five cherished grandchildren whom she adored, Brianna and Cory Quinn, Joseph Lavoie and his wife, Theresa and Larissa and Jack Riley; and her dear cousin, Fritz-Werner Steckler of Hannover, Germany. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her loving brother, Hans Hundrieser. Her funeral will be held on Friday morning, December 28, 2012 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her Committal Service will follow the Mass at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, December 27, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home.
