Obituary

TAUNTON – Mildred (Mathews) Gil, wife of the late George Gil, died at Mass. General Hospital in Boston on Dec. 20, 2012.
She was 86.
Born in Taunton, she was the daughter of the late Manuel C. and Elizabeth (Silvia) Mathews.
A 1944 graduate of Taunton High School, she later graduated from the former Bristol County Business College.
In 1982, she received a master’s degree in education from Cambridge College.
Mrs. Gil worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for over thirty-two years. She retired as a program development specialist for the Department of Mental Health at the Bridgewater Treatment Center in 1990.
A communicant of St. Anthony Church, where she served as Eucharistic Minister, she was past president of the parish’s Holy Rosary Sodality.
Past president of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, and recipient of the Marian Medal Award, she was a longtime member of the Catholic Alumni Club, (CAC).
In 1993, she was CAC Member of the Year.
A member of the Brown University Learning & Retirement Community, Taunton Board of Realtors and the Red Hats, she was also past president of the Taunton Women’s Club, and the Quota Club, in addition to having chaired their Scholarship Awards Committee.
Over the years, Mrs. Gil served a number of community organizations including the Girl Scouts of America, the Commonwealth Literacy Corps, the American Cancer Society, and the Heart Association.
She also presented workshops for those separated, widowed or divorced at the Chapel of Our Savior in Brockton, MA.
Mrs. Gil leaves a daughter, the Reverend Marlene Gil and her husband J. Steven Healey of Taunton, and several cousins.
She was also the godmother of Patricia Gil Corriveau of Cumberland, RI, Michelle Cormier Holbrook of Tewksbury, and Connie Correa Matias Cristo of Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
Her funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Monday, Dec. 24th at 8:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Visitors may call on the family on Monday, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. prior to the funeral mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Taunton Quota Club Scholarship Fund.
