Obituary

CHICOPEE – Donald R. Harrington, 87, of 400 Britton Street in the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, December 19, 2012. He passed into Eternal Life at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Holyoke on December 6, 1925, a beloved son of the late Carl N. Harrington, Sr. and Laura (Dufresne) Harrington. He was raised in Holyoke and later moved to Norman Street in the Willimansett section of Chicopee where he lived for many years before moving to the Fairview section in 2000. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Signalman Third Class. He received the American Area Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, he returned to the area and was employed for the City of Holyoke Department of Public Works at the City Incinerator. He was a longtime communicant of the former Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Willimansett and currently a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in the Aldenville section of Chicopee. He was a member of the Aldenville American Legion Post 337. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Marie (Giroux) Harrington, who was Called Home on December 13, 1984. He leaves his loving sister, Doris M. Brunelle of Chicopee; his loving brother, Carl N. Harrington, Jr. and his wife, Gertrude, of Westfield; his loving sister-in-law, Jane Harrington of Easthampton; and several cherished nephews and nieces. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his loving sister, Laura Beattie, who was Called Home in 2000; and his loving brother, Raymond P. Harrington, who was Called Home in 2003. His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, December 26, 2012, beginning at 9 a.m. at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial will follow the Mass at Notre Dame Cemetery, 63 Lyman Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday morning, December 26, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. before the Mass.
