Obituary

SALEM - Michael T. Kompa, 68, of Salem, died Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Pilgrim Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Peabody, following a long illness.

Born in Manchester, NH, he was the son of the late Theodore and Celia (Michalak) Kompa and was a resident of Salem for most of his life.

A Vietnam Era Army veteran, he served from 1967 to 1970 and attained the rank of Specialist 5th Class.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a teacher for 30 years at Salem High School and during that time, taught summer and evening courses at Salem State University for over 20 years. During his teaching career, he was the Salem High School tennis coach for both the boys and girls teams and was the recipient of the Coach of the Year award.

An excellent athlete, he was a 3 sport star at Salem High, playing baseball, basketball and football where he was a captain his senior year.

He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Ron Hayes of Hamilton Square, NJ, a niece, Stephanie Hayes, nephews Michael Hayes and Anthony Garro, a grand nephew, Connor Hayes and several cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Debra Garro.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 11 am in the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Cemetery services are private.
