Worcester- John H. “Howie” Nugent, 69, of 156 Russell St., died Friday, June 25, in UMass-Memorial Hospital.
He leaves his wife of 44 years, Mary A. (Matukevitch) Nugent; a son, Keith M. Nugent and his wife Jill of Holden; a daughter, Christina A. Oldenburg and her husband Randy of Worcester; 3 grandchildren, Sonya, Elizabeth, and Mitchell; his mother-in-law, Anna DeFeudis; his sister-in-law, Helen Matukevitch; many nephews and nieces; grandnephews and grandnieces. Two sisters, Melba Power and Mary Hazel Chamberlain, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of John F. and Bessie M. (Tabor) Nugent. He graduated from Commerce High School and Northeast Broadcast School in Boston.
Mr. Nugent owned a taxi cab in Worcester for 23 years, retiring in April.
He was a longtime little league coach with the Tris Speaker League and he coached basketball at Crompton Park. He was a radio announcer in Worcester and Rhode Island for several years and was a professional pencil portrait artist.
He was U.S. Army veteran.
Funeral services and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Donations in Howie’s memory can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. DIRSA-MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 298 Grafton St., is directing arrangements.
