Obituary

SALEM - Merrill Bennett Greaves, Sr. of Salem, died Thursday morning, November 29, 2012 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers following a brief, but courageous battle with Lung Cancer.

Born in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Lyric and Beatrice (Hayes) Greaves and was a resident of Salem for most of his life.

Mr. Greaves served in the Air Force from 1959 to 1962 with the 3906th Combat Support Group, Strategic Air Command and attained the rank of Airman 2nd Class.

Prior to his retirement in 2002, he was employed by Mass Electric, which became National Grid. He also was a member of the brick layers union.

He is survived by his son, Merrill Bennett Greaves, Jr, of Peabody,daughter, Cynthia Quinn of Beverly, 4 grandchildren, Hannah S. Greaves, Jerrell D. Greaves, James B. Quinn, Charles R. Quinn, one brother, Richard O. Greaves of Peabody, several nieces and nephews and his former wife, Maria Greaves. He was the brother of the late Ralph C. Greaves, Muriel Collins, and Gordon L. Greaves.

A fixture in Salem, he will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his friends at Dunkin Donuts on Washington Street.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 10 am at the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 24 St. Peter St., Salem. There are no visiting hours. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. For those who desire, donations may be made in his memory to the Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
