Obituary

Mary E. “Meme” Varley, 64, of Winchester, died peacefully at her home on Nov. 27, 2012 from advanced melanoma. Mary was the eldest daughter of the late William H. and Florence Elizabeth “Betty” Varley, and the granddaughter of the late Florence “Fluffy” Cleveland Dailey. Mary is survived by her brother William H. Varley, Jr., his wife Rachelle J., and their two daughters, Sarah M. and Rebecca A., all of Oak Park, CA; her brother Thomas P. Varley, his wife Elizabeth L., and their daughter Stephanie A. and son Andrew W., all of Andover, MA; her brother Michael A. Varley of Concord, NH; her sister Jane E. Varley and her husband Michael H. Mueller of Beavercreek, OR; her Goddaughter Claire E.P. Cheney of Milton, MA; and her Corgi dog, Betty. Mary was raised in Winchester, and educated in the Winchester Public School System, graduating from Winchester High School with the Class of 1966. She graduated from Sargent College at Boston University with the Class of 1970. Her early career as a physical education teacher and athletic director was followed by longtime service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) and Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). There are no visiting hours. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Sat., Dec. 15th at St. Raphael Church, 512 High St., West Medford, www.saintraphaelparish.org. All are respectfully invited to attend. It was Mary’s specific request that all attendees wear “casual and comfortable clothing” to her Memorial Mass. Interment is private. It was also Mary’s request that, in lieu of flowers or memorial donations, individuals follow the example of the Good Samaritan (Gospel of Luke; Chapter 10; Verses 25-37) and perform good deeds for your neighbors.
