Don Morris, a resident of Lady Lake, Florida for the past 14 years, passed away, June 19, 2004 at his home, following a brief illness. Don was born and lived most of his life in Fitzgerald, Georgia. He earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Florida to play for the famed Florida Gators football team. Don later served with distinction as a flight engineer in the Army Air Corp, 14th Air Force, in China, during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He worked for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad as a locomotive engineer for 39 years and was the last steam qualified engineer to retire from Fitzgerald. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, hunter and woodworker.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Norma Strickland Morris; three sons, Don Morris, Jr., Fitzgerald, Ga., John Morris, Americus, Ga., and Bob Morris, Woodstock, Ga.; one daughter, Ann Morris Lewis, Wartrace, Tennessee; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 22. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday evening, at Paulk Funeral Home, Fitzgerald.
