Obituary

Phil S. "Weed" Walker, 66, of Fitzgerald, died Saturday, November 17, 2012, at Phoebe Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM Tuesday, November 20, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Travis Fussell officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Monday evening at the funeral home.

Mr. Walker was born January 24, 1946 in Ocilla to the late John Henry Walker and the late Lucille Mitchell Walker Vann. He was a 1964 graduate of Fitzgerald High School. A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War era, he received an Award for Excellence in Basic Training and was a sharpshooter. His National Guard Unit was activated to help secure the state capital following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. He retired with 30 years of service to the telecommunications industry having worked for GTE, Alltel, Windstream, Trawick, and Black Industries. He was a member of First Baptist Church, American Legion Post #99, and enjoyed drinking coffee with his friends at Johnnie’s Drive-In.

He is survived by his wife: Linda S. Walker of Fitzgerald; daughter: Dawn & Rob Parker of Rome; son: Stan & Heather Walker of Villa Rica; two step-sons: Ben Cleghorn and Hunter Cleghorn; grandchildren: Reid Parker, Garrett Parker, Maggie Rogers, and Mallorie Rogers; brothers and sisters-in-law: Wayne & Polly Walker of Marietta, Eddie & Kendra Walker of Monroe, and Jack Walker of Fitzgerald; mother of his children: Nancy F. Yeager of Fitzgerald; sister-in-law: Vicky Walker of Leesburg; two aunts: Lois Brewer and Melba Mitchell as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Mike Walker.
