Obituary

BRIDGEWATER- Arlene H. (Gow) Carter, 94, a lifelong resident of Bridgewater died Monday at Bridgewater Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Richard B. Carter.

Born May 27, 1910 in Bridgewater, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Margaret (Kerr) Gow.

Mrs. Carter was a graduate of Bridgewater High School, Class of 1928, and of Bridgewater State College, Class of 1932, earning a teaching degree..

She taught business subjects and was a guidance counselor for Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School for 35 years, retiring in 1977.

In her younger years, Mrs. Carter played semi-pro basketball.She was a former department head, where she designed and initiated the business curriculum.

For many years, Mrs. Carter was the yearbook advisor, senior class advisor and she had also been in charge of the scholarship program within the school. She was also the former director of the Adult Education Program for the high school.

She was a member of the Woman’s Guild and was a guest speaker at the Lion’s Club, Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Carlene Flannery Veara of South Yarmouth; a son, Richard B. Carter of Ashland; three grandchildren, Richard C. Flannery of Bridgewater, Richard B. Carter of Whitinville and Jeffrey R. Carter of Hopkinton and six great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Prophett Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St. (Rte. 18), Bridgewater. Burial will be in Mt. Prospect Cemetery.
