Obituary

BEVERLY: William J. “Bill” Hyland, 93, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 10, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Grace M. (Neville) Hyland with whom he shared sixty-six years of marriage.
Born in Beverly on June 23, 1919, he was the son of the late William J. and Helen (Cassidy) Hyland. He was a graduate of Beverly High School class of 1937. He attended Northeastern University and later graduated from Fitchburg University with a degree in teaching. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was honorably discharged in September 1945. He was a longtime member of the Herman A. Spear Post # 331, American Legion and the V.F.W. Post #545 both of Beverly.
Bill taught at North Reading Junior High School for many years and at Beverly High School, where he retired in 1986. One of Bill’s fondest memories was traveling many times with Grace to Ireland. He was very proud of his Irish heritage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving son, Stephen Hyland; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Jason and Scott Hyland; two great-grandchildren Ivy and Dalton Hyland; a sister-in-law, Mary Sabine and her husband Laurie and among his many nieces and nephews, his loving niece, Sandra Moses. He was also predeceased by his sister, Gladys Herzog and her husband Robert.
His funeral service will be held on Thursday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot St., Beverly at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 – 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923. Interment will be held in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
