Carmino A. “Moose” Longhi, 90, of Hudson, died Sunday, Oct. 28th at Marlboro Hills Healthcare Center. He was the husband of 65 years to the late Hazel A. (Fish) Longhi who died in March of 2011.
Moose was born in Springfield, son of the late Rapheal and Josephine (di Mario) Longhi. He attended grammar school in Milford and Franklin. He was one of the “Henry Ford Boys”, graduating from the Wayside Inn High School for boys in 1941. Following high school he moved to Hudson and went to work for LaPointe’s Machine and Tool Co. of Hudson for two years and in 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific Theatre throughout the remainder of WWII after being assigned to the Destroyer, USS John W. Weeks DD701. He was honorably discharged on April 6, 1946.
Moose married Hazel on April 21, 1946 and they both spent the following years raising their four children. He returned to LaPointe’s and worked there until their closing after 32 years. He spent time on several jobs until joining the Hudson Housing Authority. He retired from the Housing Authority at age 62 and began part-time work until the age of 80. He was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Hudson Lodge of Elks, member of the Bingo and Christmas Basket Committee and attained Honorary Life Membership at the club. Since his appointment as a Special Police officer in the 1940’s, Moose served his adopted community as a former Selectman in the town of Hudson; he spent 5 years serving on the Finance Committee; was a member of the Personnel Board and was pleased to receive an engraved plaque recognizing his long service to the Economic Development Commission in Hudson. He and his wife Hazel enjoyed square dancing during the 80’s and following his square dancing days, he will be remembered by all his friends who received his many pies, breads and cakes he baked; the children who received those special toys he crafted in his wood shop and those who met him on his daily walks with a “hello” and “how are you”. He loved his family and enjoyed every moment with them, especially his grand and great grandchildren who were very special to him.
He is survived by his children, Karen Hawes and her husband Ronald of Ellsworth, ME, Michael Longhi and his wife Becky of St. Louis, MO, Mary Osborne, wife of the late David Osborne of Hudson and Jo-Lee Craven and her husband Jim of Maryville, TN. He is also survived by his sister, Marie Parente and her husband Francis of Milford; his sister in-law, Jane Longhi of Chicopee; his 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Joseph, Daniel and Leo Longhi.
A service and celebration of Moose’s life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3rd at 11:30 a.m. in the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749. Burial will follow in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson. Calling hours for will be held on Friday, Nov. 2nd from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
