Obituary

CHICOPEE – Lucien A. “Bunny” Grondin, 91, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Saturday, November 3, 2012. He passed into Eternal Life at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Saint Paul de Joliette, Province of Quebec, Canada on November 4, 1920, a beloved son of the late Francois X. and Leona (St. Pierre) Grondin. In 1922, he came with his parents to Ludlow where they took up their residence. His family moved to the Indian Orchard section of Springfield where he lived for many years. In 1938, he graduated from the former Springfield Trade High School and later attended the Vaughn Barber School in Springfield. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Motor Machinist Mate Second Class. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, he returned to Indian Orchard. He married in 1948, and in 1958, he and his late wife, Rena moved to the Aldenville section of Chicopee. He was first employed by the former Gilbert and Barker Company in West Springfield which later became the Gilbarco Company while working part time as a barber. He was last employed as the supervisor of the tool room at the former Worthington Pump Company which later became the Atlas Copco Company in Holyoke and retired in 1982. Following his retirement, he was active in the community and was a longtime driver at Valley View Senior Housing and the Aldenville Senior Center in Chicopee. He was a former scout leader for the Cub Scout Pack 138 and the Boy Scout Troop 138 in Aldenville. Active in his faith, Lucien was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville where he was a former member of the League of the Sacred Heart. He was also a former worker for the Annual Catholic Stewardship Appeal for his Parish. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his dear sister Simonne Craven. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Rena C. (Bibeau) Grondin who was Called Home on September 11, 2012. They were married on October 9, 1948 at the former Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Willimansett and were blessed with nearly 64 years of happiness together. He leaves: his loving children, Allan R. Grondin of Tolland, MA and Paula G. Albertowicz and her husband David of Chicopee; his dear sister-in-law, Jeanne Bibeau of Longmeadow; his dear brother-in-law, Richard Chartier of Chicopee; and several dear nephews, nieces and cousins. His family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers, Alice, Mebal and Brenda for their constant care and support while he was at home and they would also like to thank the staff at the Holyoke Soldiers Home on 4 West and 3 North (Comfort Care) for their loving care. His funeral will be held on Friday morning, November 9, 2012 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with Military Honors will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, November 8, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to either the Holyoke Soldiers Home, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040 or to the Alzheimers Association, 264 Cottage Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
