Charles Edwin “Bud” Barber, age 84, of Hancock Drive, Mystic CT died October 27, 2012 at home. He was born in Watch Hill on August 22, 1928 to the late Evelyn and Edwin Barber.
Bud’s life was dedicated to his community and to his family. He spent many years as an active resident of the Village of Watch Hill. He spent his last seventeen years as a resident of Mystic, CT where he will be remembered as a good friend and neighbor, always making lemonade out of lemons. People may remember Bud as a friendly school bus driver for the Westerly Schools, as the owner of the Watch Hill Garage, as the Chief of the Watch Hill Fire Department (1969-1978) or President of the Southern League of Fire Chiefs.
He loved to travel, plan his flower garden and nurture the birds that frequented his yard. As a young man, Bud served his country as a member of the United States Army.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Mary Wilkinson Barber; his four sons, Willie and his wife Linda, Andrew and his wife Paula, Michael and his wife Tricia, all of Westerly, Danny of Pawcatuck; his two daughters Maryjane Utley and Patricia Barber of Westerly. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren, Trevor Utley, Timothy Utley, Lila Barber, Jackson Barber, William Barber, Albert Barber, Joshua Barber, Andrew Barber, Leslie Barber and Julie Barber, all of Westerly, Christopher and Lindsay Barber of Stonington. He was predeceased by his son Paul Barber and his sister, Edna Lanphear.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Monday, November 5th from 6-8pm. A gathering will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, friends may respectfully make a donation to the Visiting Nurse Assoc. of SECT, or Hospice of SECT.
