Obituary

Alfred A. Helger, Sr., 78, of Little Compton, died peacefully Monday, October 29, 2012 at the Village House, Newport, RI after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Joyce H. (Chace) Helger. Born in Tiverton, he was a son of the late George E. and Mary S. (Silvia) Helger.

Mr. Helger resided in Tiverton and Little Compton his entire life and was the former co-owner and operator of Helger’s United Oil, Tiverton until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of Bliss Four Corners Congregational Church, Tiverton, where he served as a deacon and trustee. Mr. Helger was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was an avid antique car enthusiast, shell-fisherman, enjoyed travelling and spending time with his family. Beside his wife he is survived by 3 sons: Alfred A. Helger, Jr. and William G. Helger both of Little Compton and James A Helger of Rutland, MA; 2 daughters: Gail J. Martin of Westport and Laurie A. Eline of Salem, MA; 2 brothers: Alvin E. Helger and Carl R. Helger both of Tiverton; 9 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; several nieces and nephews; He was grandfather of the late Holly Martin and brother of the late: Raymond, Harry, George, Arthur, Edward, Norman and Donald Helger, Mildred Helger, Alice Manchester, Flora Vaz and Mary Crites.

Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited to attend will be Friday, November 2, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at Bliss Four Corners Congregational Church, Tiverton.

Calling hours will be Thursday 5-8 P.M. at POTTER FUNERAL HOME, 81 Reed Road, Westport, MA.

Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Tiverton.
